His second opera The Silver Tassie was developed with English National Opera between 1997 and 2000, and from 2000 to 2003 he was Associate Composer with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, for whom he wrote Etudes and Elegies. In January 2003 Mark-Anthony Turnage was the featured composer in the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s contemporary music weekend at the Barbican.

Turnage is currently Composer in Residence with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mark-Anthony Turnage in conversation with Christopher Cook

Mark-Anthony Turnage was born in 1960. He studied with Oliver Knussen and John Lambert and later Gunther Schuller. It was the composer Hans Werner Henze’s invitation in 1988 to write an opera – Greek – for the Munich Biennale festival that established Turnage’s international reputation. The major works that followed, including Three Screaming Popes and Drowned Out, were composed during a long and fruitful relationship with Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Turnage has always valued a close creative relationship with particular music institutions.

Scherzoid (2004) was jointly commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. “I wanted to write a fast piece because I’d written a lot of slow music over the year before, so even the trios here have a lot of fast movement within their textures.” Energy is the key to the piece, the energy you can generate in an orchestra. “I had been listening to Beethoven scherzos.” And it was the scherzo from the Ninth symphony – “incredible” says Turnage – that provided a model for Scherzoid.

So ‘scherzo’ from Beethoven, but why the title Scherzoid? Is it from ‘schizoid’; a Turnage joke about a composer who is happy to be in two minds about classical music and jazz

and at home in both? “I don’t see them as low and high art. I want them to be integrated.

I love jazz and it’s absorbed into everything I’m doing.” Nevertheless, Turnage agrees that Scherzoid is more jazzy than he thought it was going to be. “And of course there’s a sax in there and bass clarinets. I just love that sound – sensuous but also ‘cutting’.”

As for the saxophone “there’s this theory that it doesn’t ‘blend’. If you put it with the clarinets and oboe maybe it doesn’t, but if it’s with the trumpets and the horns it fits in fine.” There’s only one saxophone solo in Scherzoid; generally it doubles up with other instruments in the orchestra “and it gives the melodic line a real bite. The saxophone has this great range: it can play mellow but it can also play rough.”

Yet Another Set To (2005) began its musical life as plain Set To, written for ten players from London Brass. Then it became a single movement piece for solo trombone and orchestra, Another Set To, for the virtuoso Christian Lindberg who subsequently asked for a three movement concerto (Yet Another Set To) to take around the world. Turnage decided to rework part of an earlier piece – Blood on the Floor – as the basis of a first movement. “Then I added a slow movement just for strings, which is almost like a slow middle movement from one of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.”

It’s a moment of poise between “the two outer movements because they are so dense.”

Turnage says that while he was writing Yet Another Set To he thought of it as a challenge to Lindberg’s virtuosity. “Could I write a piece that was so hard that Christian would come back and say ‘I can’t play this’?” But the trombonist only had a single complaint. “In the first movement I’d written a few low B naturals which were very hard to do because they were right at the bottom of the instrument. And that was the only thing he asked me to change.”

Evening Songs (1998) is “another of those pieces where all three of its movements come from elsewhere. The finale was originally the final epilogue of the chamber opera Country of the Blind which I wrote for the Aldeburgh Festival.” Turnage had been commissioned by the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg and Christoph Eschenbach to write a piece for a Millennium Festival. “So I asked if I could add two movements to that epilogue.”

So like Yet Another Set To, Evening Songs is made up of older music reworked into a new whole. Turnage is quick to refute the charge that he is simply ‘recycling’ his music.

“There’s such a history of this. Handel is a great example. Bach too. Everyone used to

do it and if I didn’t reveal what I’ve done people probably wouldn’t even notice.”

The title Evening Songs suggests that this is night music, the sound too. And it is. When he was young Turnage liked to listen to music at night. “I’ve memories of hearing things like the nightmarish scherzo in Bruckner Nine in the dark in my early teens.

That’s stayed with me so that I find myself writing a lot of nocturnes and lullabies.”

There’s also a personal ‘night reminiscence’ in the last of these Evening Songs. “It has an ebb and flow which is almost like breathing. When I was writing the opera Country of the Blind my son William was very young and because of cot deaths and things like that I was constantly checking his breathing. Then when he got a cold his breathing became congested.” And that’s the sound Turnage composed into the third movement of Evening Songs. Throughout the piece there’s also a new sophistication in the orchestration. “It’s a saturated string sound which I haven’t done much before or since.”

When I Woke (2001) is a musical setting of three Dylan Thomas poems – literally songs of love, life and death, written in his ripest manner. “I found them really hard to set because the sound of them is so musical.”

Turnage was certain that he couldn’t match the pulpit oratory that makes Thomas’s poetic voice unmistakeable. “I wanted to do something that was more lyrical.” So the music seems to fold itself around the words. “That was deliberate. I almost find Dylan Thomas too much; it’s so melodramatic that I wanted to let the words speak for themselves.”

When I Woke is performed by the baritone Gerald Finley, a long time collaborator with Mark-Anthony Turnage. He created the lead role in The Silver Tassie and gave the first performance of Torn Fields, another short song cycle. “I kept hearing Finley’s voice in my head when I was setting these poems.

There’s such an integrity in what he does; and it’s the same thing with Christian Lindberg.

They give such authoritative performances that I can’t divorce them from the work.”

British conductor Jonathan Nott studied in Cambridge, Manchester and London. In 1988 he made his conducting debut at the Opera Festival in Battignano, and was appointed Kapellmeister at Frankfurt Opera the following year. In 1991 he was appointed first Kapellmeister at the Hessian National Theater Wiesbaden and went on to become interim Chief Music Director for the 1995/96 season. Jonathan Nott has guest conducted many renowned orchestras including the WDR Cologne, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Tonhalle, NDR Hamburg, NHK Symphony, Concertgebouw, Munich and London Philharmonic Orchestras and the Orchestre de Paris. He has also worked with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he recorded the complete orchestral works of György Ligeti. Jonathan Nott took up his current post of Principal Conductor of the Bamberger Symphoniker in January 2000.

A great champion of contemporary music, Nott has given world premières of works

by Ferneyhough, Rihm and Lachenmann. In August 2000 he became Principal Conductor of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and was guest conductor of the Ensemble Modern in a programme of Nancarrow and Boulez at the 2003 Salzburg Festival. Highlights of the 2005/06 season include concerts with

the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonic Orchestras and tours of Spain and Japan with the Bamberger Symphoniker.

VLADIMIR JUROWSKI conductor Born in Moscow, Vladimir Jurowski studied at the Moscow Conservatory before moving with his family to Germany where he finished his studies in Dresden and Berlin. He made his international debut at the Wexford Festival in 1995 and his success there catapulted him onto the world stage as one of the most dynamic young conductors of our time.

He has conducted orchestras all over the world, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Russian National Orchestras, and appeared with the most prestigious opera companies such as The Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opera Bastille in Paris, Komische Oper Berlin and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His discography includes works

by Giya Kancheli, Meyerbeer, Massenet, Milhaud, Debussy and Tomasi.

Vladimir Jurowski has been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera since January 2001 and in 2003 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London

His work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra has included highly successful concerts in London, at the Edinburgh Festival and at San Sebastian in Spain as well as acclaimed performances of Britten’s Albert Herring, Rachmaninov’s The Miserly Knight and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Marin Alsop is a native of New York City and a graduate of Yale and Juilliard. She studied under Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Gustav Meier. Recent accolades have included a Royal Philharmonic Society Award, a Brit Award and Grammy nominations.

Christian Lindberg’s compositions for the trombone have been performed around the world with great success. CHRISTIAN LINDBERG trombone Christian Lindberg’s versatility marks him as a most remarkable musician.

He is a pioneer virtuoso solo trombonist, for whom many of today’s major composers have been inspired to write new works.

He is Chief Conductor of both the Swedish Wind Ensemble and the Nordic Chamber Orchestra. As a performer Christian Lindberg has appeared with major international orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, BBC and Chicago Symphony Orchestras.

He has recently premièred concertos by Mark-Anthony Turnage (with the London Philharmonic Orchestra) and Rolf Martinsson (with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic).

Lindberg made his debut as a conductor in October 2000 and has since conducted such orchestras as the Helsinki Philharmonic, Iceland Symphony, Swedish Chamber and

The Canadian baritone Gerald Finley has become one of the leading singers and dramatic interpreters of his generation, performing to critical acclaim at major opera and concert venues in a wide variety of repertoire. His collaborations with leading conductors including Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Roger Norrington, Antonio Pappano and Sir Simon Rattle have been part of a flourishing career. Gerald Finley’s work in opera has been founded on Mozart and Handel, but he has also created numerous leading roles including J. Robert Oppenheimer in John Adams’ Doctor Atomic and Harry Heegan in

Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie at English National Opera for which he won the 2000 Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Singers. His concert and recording work is equally prestigious, and he has premièred new works by Turnage, Saariaho and Julian Philips.

He works regularly as a recitalist with Julius Drake, with whom he has recently released a solo disc of Ives songs for Hyperion Records.

Gerald Finley began singing as a chorister in Ottawa, Canada, and continued his musical studies in the UK at the Royal College of Music, King’s College, Cambridge, and the National Opera Studio, before continuing his singing training with Armen Boyajian in New York.

Mark-Anthony Turnage im Gespräch mit Christopher Cook Scherzoid (2004) ist ein gemeinsames Auftragswerk der Londoner und New Yorker Philharmoniker. „Ich wollte gern ein schnelles Stück schreiben, da ich in den Jahren zuvor eine Menge langsamer Musik komponiert hatte.

Daher sind hier sogar die Trios in ihrer Struktur vielfach schnell.“ Der Schlüssel zu dem Stück ist Energie, die Art von Energie, die man in einem Orchester erzeugen kann. „Ich hatte mir Beethovens Scherzi angehört.“ Und es war das Scherzo aus der Neunten Symphonie - „unglaublich“, sagt Turnage -, das als Modell für Scherzoid diente.

Also „Scherzo“ von Beethoven, aber warum der Titel Scherzoid? Das Wort erinnert an „schizoid“: Meint Turnage damit witzigerweise einen Komponisten, der in zwei Persönlichkeiten gespalten ist, eine klassische und eine jazzige, und sich in beiden zu Hause fühlt? „Ich betrachte Klassik und Jazz nicht als hohe und niedere Kunst. Ich wünsche mir eine Vereinigung beider. Ich liebe Jazz; er fliesst ein in alles, was ich tue.“ Dennoch gibt Turnage zu, dass Scherzoid jazziger wurde als ursprünglich geplant. „Und natürlich gibt es darin ein Saxophon und Bassklarinetten. Ich liebe diesen Klang - sinnlich und dabei doch ‚schneidend’.“ In Bezug auf das Saxophon „gibt es diese Theorie, dass es sich nicht einfügt. Das mag stimmen, wenn es zusammen mit den Klarinetten und der Oboe gespielt wird, aber mit den Trompeten und Hörnern geht es wunderbar.“ Es gibt nur ein Saxophon-Solo in Scherzoid; normalerweise erklingt es zusammen mit anderen Orchesterinstrumenten. „Es gibt der Melodielinie richtigen Biss. Das Saxophon verfügt über eine reiche Ausdrucksskala: es kann weich klingen, aber auch rauh.“

Yet Another Set To (2005) begann seine Existenz als schlichtes Set To, geschrieben für zehn Musiker von London Brass. Dann wurde daraus Another Set To, ein einsätziges Stück für Soloposaune und Orchester für den Posaunenvirtuosen Christian Lindberg, der in der Folge um ein dreisätziges Konzert bat (Yet Another Set To), das er auf der ganzen Welt spielen wollte. Turnage entschloss sich, als Grundlage des ersten Satzes einen Teil einer früheren Komposition - Blood on the Floor - umzuarbeiten. „Dann fügte ich einen langsamen Satz nur für Streicher hinzu, der fast einem der langsamen mittleren Sätze aus einem der Bandenburgischen Konzerte von Bach gleicht.“ Er ist ein Moment des Spannungsausgleichs zwischen „den beiden Ecksätzen, die sehr dicht sind.“ Turnage erzählt, dass er bei der Arbeit an Yet Another Set To daran dachte, Lindberg als Virtuosen auf die Probe zu stellen. „Ob ich wohl ein Stück schreiben könnte, das so schwierig war, dass Christian mir sagen würde: ‚Das kann ich nicht spielen’?“ Aber der Posaunist hatte nur einen Einwand. „Im ersten Satz hatte ich einige tiefe h eingebaut, die, da ganz unten am Instrument liegend, sehr schwer zu spielen waren. Und das war alles, was er geändert haben wollte.“ Evening Songs (1998) „ist auch eines von diesen Stücken, bei denen alle drei Sätze von woanders herstammen. Das Finale war ursprünglich der Schlussepilog der Kammeroper Country of the Blind, die ich für das Aldeburgh Festival geschrieben

habe.“ Das NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg und Christoph Eschenbach hatten Turnage gebeten, ein Stück für ein Festival zur Jahrtausendwende zu schreiben. „Da habe ich gefragt, ob ich zu diesem Epilog zwei weitere Sätze komponieren könnte.“ So bestehen die Evening Songs, wie Yet Another Set To, aus bereits existierender Musik, die in ein neues Ganzes umgeschmolzen wurde.

Turnage weist den Vorwurf weit von sich, dass er seine Musik einfach ‚recycelt’. „Das hat doch eine ganz lange Geschichte. Händel ist ein hervorragendes Beispiel, ebenso Bach. Jeder hat das gemacht, und wenn ich nicht darauf hinweisen würde, was ich getan habe, würden die Leute es vermutlich nicht einmal merken.“ Der Titel Evening Songs lässt mit Recht an Nachtmusik denken. In seiner Jugend liebte Turnage es, nächtens Musik zu hören. „Ich kann mich erinnern, dass ich als Teenager im Dunkeln Sachen gehört habe wie das alptraumhafte Scherzo aus Bruckners Neunter.

Das ist an mir haften geblieben, so dass ich mich immer wieder dabei ertappe, Nocturnes und Wiegenlieder zu schreiben.“ Im letzten dieser Evening Songs findet sich auch eine persönliche ‚Nachterinnerung’. „Es gibt dort ein Ebben und Fluten, das fast an Atmen denken lässt. Als ich an der Oper Country of the Blind sass, war mein Sohn William noch sehr klein, und weil ich immer Angst vor dem plötzlichen Kindstod und solchen Sachen hatte, habe ich immer wieder auf seinen Atem gelauscht. Als er erkältet

war, war sein Atem blockiert.“ Und das hört man im dritten Satz der Evening Songs. Im ganzen Stück gibt es auch eine sehr originelle Orchestrierung. „Der Streicherklang ist sehr satt; etwas Derartiges habe ich eigentlich weder davor noch danach geschrieben.“ When I Woke (2001) ist die Vertonung dreier Gedichte von Dylan Thomas, Liedern von Liebe, Leben und Tod in seiner reifsten Machart. „Ich fand die musikalische Umsetzung wirklich schwierig, da der Klang der Gedichte an sich schon so musikalisch ist.“ Turnage war überzeugt, dass er den Predigerstil nicht treffen würde, der Thomas’ Lyrik so unverwechselbar macht. „Ich wollte etwas Lyrischeres machen.“ So scheint es, als hülle die Musik die Worte ein. „Das ist Absicht.

Ich finde Dylan Thomas fast schon zu viel; er ist so melodramatisch, dass ich die Wörter für sich selbst sprechen lassen wollte.“ When I Woke wird vom Bariton Gerald Finley gesungen, mit dem Mark-Anthony Turnage immer wieder gearbeitet hat. Er war der Sänger der Uraufführung von The Silver Tassie und auch von Torn Fields, eines weiteren kurzen Liederzyklus’. „Ich hatte Finleys Stimme in meinem Kopf, als ich an der Vertonung dieser Gedichte sass. Es ist so eine Geschlossenheit in allem, was er tut. Genauso ist es bei Christian Lindberg. Ihre Interpretationen sind so treffend, dass ich mir das Werk ohne sie gar nicht mehr vorstellen kann.“ Christopher Cook Übersetzung: Martina Gottschau

Der britische Dirigent Jonathan Nott studierte in Cambridge, Manchester und London. 1988 debütierte er bei den Opernfestspielen in Battignano; im folgenden Jahr wurde er auf den Posten des Kapellmeisters der Frankfurter Oper berufen. 1991 wurde er zum Ersten Kapellmeister des Hessischen Staatstheaters Wiesbaden ernannt, wo er in der Saison 1995/1996 auf Interimsbasis auch als Generalmusikdirektor wirkte. Als Gastdirigent leitete Jonathan Nott viele renommierte Orchester, u. a. das WDR-Sinfonieorchester Köln, das Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, das Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, das NDR Sinfonieorchester, die NHK Symphony, das Königliche Concertgebouw-Orchester, die Münchner und Londoner Philharmoniker und das Orchestre de Paris. Mit den Berliner Philharmonikern hat er das komplette Orchesterwerk von György Ligeti eingespielt.

Seit Januar 2000 ist Jonathan Nott Chefdirigent der Bamberger Symphoniker.

Als grosser Verfechter zeitgenössischer Musik hat er die Welturaufführungen von Werken von Ferneyhough, Rihm und Lachenmann geleitet. Im August 2000 trat er den Posten des Chefdirigenten des Ensemble Intercontemporain an. Bei den Salzburger Festspielen 2003 war er zu Gast beim Ensemble Modern und stellte ein Programm mit Kompositionen von Nancarrow und Boulez vor. Höhepunkte der Saison 2005/2006 werden u. a. Auftritte mit dem Los Angeles Philharmonic und dem New York Philharmonic sowie Spanien- und Japan-Tourneen mit den Bamberger Symphonikern sein.

Der in Moskau geborene Vladimir Jurowski studierte am dortigen Konservatorium und übersiedelte dann mit seiner Familie nach Deutschland; sein Studium schloß er in Dresden und Berlin ab. Sein internationales Debüt gab er 1995 beim Wexford Festival. Der dort errungene Erfolg machte ihn weltweit als einen der dynamischsten jungen Dirigenten unserer Zeit bekannt.

Marin Alsop ist Chefdirigentin des Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra und Ehrendirigentin des Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Als Gast steht sie an den Pulten von Orchestern wie dem Chicago Symphony, den Philharmonikern von New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, dem London Symphony, London Philharmonic, dem ConcertgebouwOrchester, dem Orchestre de Paris und den Münchner Philharmonikern. Sie ist zudem Intendantin des auf zeitgenössische Musik spezialisierten Cabrillo Festivals. Mit Beginn der Spielzeit 2007/2008 wird sie den Posten der musikalischen Leiterin des Baltimore Symphony Orchestra übernehmen.

Er hat überall auf der Welt dirigiert, u. a. das Los Angeles Philharmonic, die Berliner Philharmoniker, die Rotterdamer Philharmoniker und das Russische Nationalorchester; dazu leitete er Aufführungen an den prestigeträchtigsten Opernhäusern, so z. B. an Covent Garden, der Opéra Bastille in Paris, der Komischen Oper Berlin und der Met in New York. Seine Diskographie beinhaltet Werke von Gija Kantscheli, Meyerbeer, Massenet, Milhaud, Debussy und Tomasi.

Seit Januar 2001 hat er das Amt des musikalischen Leiters der Opernfestspiele von Glyndebourne inne; im Jahre 2003 wurde er zum Ersten Gastdirigenten des London Philharmonic Orchestra berufen. Mit diesem Orchester hat er sehr erfolgreiche Konzerte in London und bei den Festivals in Edinburgh sowie San Sebastián/Spanien gegeben; zu erwähnen sind ferner hochgelobte Aufführungen von Brittens „Albert Herring“, Rachmaninows „Der geizige Ritter“ und Puccinis „Gianni Schicchi“ beim Glyndebourne Festival.

Zu ihrer Diskographie zählen die erste CD eines Zyklus von Brahms’ Symphonien mit dem London Philharmonic Orchestra, Einspielungen mit Orchesterwerken von Barber mit dem Royal Scottish National Orchestra (dessen Chefdirigentin sie zwischen 1999 und 2003 war) und eine Reihe von bereits erschienenen Aufnahmen mit dem Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, darunter Werke von Adams, Bernstein, Glass, Weill und Bartók.

Marin Alsop ist aus New York City gebürtig und Absolventin von Yale und Juilliard, zu ihren Lehrern gehörten Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa und Gustav Meier. In der jüngeren Vergangenheit wurde sie u. a. mit dem Royal Philharmonic Society Award, einem Brit Award und verschiedenen Grammy-Nominierungen ausgezeichnet.

GERALD FINLEY Bariton

Seine Vielseitigkeit macht Christian Lindberg zu einem ungewöhnlichen Musiker. Er hat die Posaune zu einem virtuosen Soloinstrument erhoben und viele zeitgenössische Komponisten zu neuen Arbeiten inspiriert.

Zudem leitet er das Schwedische Bläserensemble und das Nordic Chamber Orchestra. Als Solist trat Christian Lindberg mit den grossen internationalen Orchestern auf, so mit den Berliner Philharmonikern sowie dem BBC und dem Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Erst kürzlich spielte er in den Uraufführungen der Konzerte von Mark-Anthony Turnage (mit dem London Philharmonic Orchestra) und Rolf Martinsson (mit dem Royal Stockholm Philharmonic). 2000 gab er sein Debüt als Dirigent; seitdem stand er am Pult des Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, der Iceland Symphony, des Schwedischen Kammerorchesters und des Symphonieorchesters von Sao Paulo.

Einladungen liegen vom Residentie Orkest, der Rheinischen Philharmonie und den Prager Symphonikern vor. Christian Lindbergs Kompositionen für sein Instrument stehen in der ganzen Welt auf dem Programm. Bei Christian Lindberg hat das schweizerische Sion International Music Festival ein Konzert für Trompete, Posaune und Orchester in Auftrag gegeben, das Scottish Chamber Orchestra ein Trompetenkonzert und das Schwedische Kammerorchester ein Flötenkonzert. Es stehen weitere Kompositionsaufträge des Chicago Symphony und des Scottish Chamber Orchestra an.

Der kanadische Bariton Gerald Finley gilt heute als einer der führenden Sänger seiner Generation; mit seinem umfangreichen Repertoire tritt er in den grossen Opernhäusern und Konzertsälen der Welt auf. Er kann auf die Zusammenarbeit mit bedeutenden Dirigenten zurückblicken, darunter Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Roger Norrington, Antonio Pappano und Sir Simon Rattle. Mit Interpretationen von Mozart- und Händelpartien ist Gerald Finley berühmt geworden, aber er stand auch bei zahlreichen Uraufführungen auf der Bühne, z.

B. als J. Robert Oppenheimer in John Adams’ Doctor Atomic und als Harry Heegan in MarkAnthony Turnages The Silver Tassie an der English National Opera, wofür ihm 2000 der Sängerpreis der Royal Philharmonic Society zuerkannt wurde. Seine Konzerttätigkeit sowie seine Diskographie sind ebenfalls beeindruckend; so hat er Werke von Turnage, Saariaho und Julian Philips aus der Taufe gehoben. Sein ständiger Liedbegleiter ist Julius Drake; vor kurzem kam bei Hyperion eine CD mit Liedern von Charles Ives heraus. Gerald Finley machte erste sängerische Erfahrungen als Chorsänger im kanadischen Ottawa und studierte später in Grossbritannien am Royal College of Music, am King’s College Cambridge und am National Opera Studio und setzte dann seine Gesangsstudien bei Armen Boyajian in New York fort.
